Kate attempted to attack her pregnant daughter with a knife on several times, blaming Dorothy for all of her problems. Kate was furious with Dorothy. Dorothy’s tragic circumstances resulted in the birth of a healthy baby boy named Kevin. But she was constantly afraid that her mother would inadvertently harm the infant. Dorothy spent her first three years as a mother always worried about her child’s safety. Dorothy made the decision to place Kevin in an orphanage after being worn down by the suffering and misery that had befallen her in such a short amount of time.

Dorothy was moved to tears by the idea that she had to make this decision. She cherished her child, but she was still suffering from the horror of the fire, having lost both her brother and fiance, so she took the best humanitarian decision she could. Even though it broke her heart, she knew it was for the best.
