The couple was planning their wedding, but the sad events that befell the Wilson family prevented the poor lady from basking in her bliss. Dorothy’s mentally handicapped brother, Peter, was responsible for setting fire to their house one evening. Jack went inside to try to save him, but they were both destroyed by the fire, leaving them homeless.

As a result of the landlord’s actions, Dorothy and her mother were evicted from their home and forced to live in a rundown shanty. They were able to acquire it with the proceeds from the sale of Jack’s sheep. Dorothy had recently learned she was going to be a mother at the moment. Unfortunately, her mother had already begun to show signs of dementia, one of which was aggressive conduct, at the time. Dementia had already begun to progress at that point.
