Madmen, Frasier, Wet Hot American Summer, The Walking Dead, Narcos; this year Netflix has brought such an enormous selection from which to choose your next show to binge-watch. Nostalgic shows from decades ago to weekly releases of new Netflix originals. Trying to discern which series simply cannot be missed, we looked at more than 70 leading shows to try and help you sift through the masses without watching hours of unwanted intros.
Honorable Mention: Parks and Recreation
The honorable mention goes to a quirky and incredibly witty show, seemingly a spinoff of the Office but became its own as it laughed at itself throughout the seasons: Parks and Recreation. Jampacked with amazing writing and even funnier cross-episode running jokes, this is our runner up because of its wide-reaching sense of humor and the appeal to the giggly side in all of us. When you have some spare time after our top 3, make sure you flip through at least the first season and try not to die of laughter.
Freaks and Geeks
Starting with number 3 in our books for this year so far: Freaks and Geeks. If nostalgia of millennials had a face, we all know it would be of Seth Rogen and James Franco in this timeless teenage struggle to find teenage identity. Through the teen trials of bullies, drugs and social status, this show connects to the experiences many teens struggle with and chronicles how they coped with the rough and tumble high school days of the 1980’s. A must watch for those who missed it first time around (thanks Netflix)!
Number 2 in our books is the gripping action/drama Breaking Bad. The show follows a seemingly mundane high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with cancer who struggles to cope with his mortality while trying to secure the financial future of his family once he’s gone. This show takes us on an emotional, action-packed and drama filled rollercoaster ride that continually gets more intense the more you watch it. Akin to the side affects of this show’s drug of choice, the storyline is highly addictive and gripping with a script full of heavy undertones and stabbing heartbreakers. This is THE ‘edge of your seat’ show that you’ve been waiting for; try to watch just one episode.
First place is a given: MAD MEN. Cool, classy and scandalous. The 1960’s set drama about the advertising world from the inside out. Protagonist Donald Draper gives us a peek into the lavish lives of the elite advertising executives on Madison avenue to show us a realist perspective into their lives in as well as outside the office. Excessive drinking, over smoking and playboy antics are but a few of the jaw dropping scenes creator Matthew Weiner has envisioned and delivered, without missing a beat. In the case of this series, its not only a must watch, it’s a must watch over and over again- with 5 Golden Globes and critically acclaimed, factoring this ‘end of an era’ drama into your schedule is beyond a must see- it’s a necessity.
